Response to reading Swales chapter 4 Data commentary

I think this chapter described the data commentary using in academic writing for graduate students.
The author told us this "data commentaries" have many statements like summary statements, highlighting statements, problem statements, and etc. After reading I got to know the highlight needs good judgment by the phrase using. Does this phrase weaken in strength in a sentence, now I can answer it depends on the different words' degrees. Through some data table analyse, I read the sentences of their commentary has rigorous logic. When I write, I was really lack of that rigorous logic. If I deal with the graph and translate into academic words, I feel trouble. So when I research, I always afraid to analyse the graph. However, it is not very complex description by this article, and the author gives us the rules and terms in using. I think I will follow some terms by this article.

MY thesis topics

The traditional second language education is most lack of initiative. How to change them by new ideas? It is worth of consideration.
Nowadays it is important and necessary to develop the students self-learning ability. Specially, the teaching methods also need IT support. So I would like to write the thesis about "language learning with computer technology". And this is my thought in rough, I am not very sure about it. The sub-topics are ideology and principle in English language self-learning; the states of public school language teaching in computer technology; develop the language self- learning ability by computer technology. Maybe I will think more or change these small topics after.

Response of Swales' article

After finished reading Swales' article, I got more understand of academic writing. When we start to write, we must consider the audience, purpose, organization, style, and presentation.(p.8) Writing was not invented, it need regulars, patterns so that readers can follow. In this article, I had studied the "good-news" and "bad-news" format. I did not pay attention to those before, when my high school teacher asked me to write a news letter, I was just use the native think way to do as a writing assignment . In organize information, the academic writing has four parts(p.12):
Compare these steps, I found my writing before was lack in many details. I have to improve my writing skills, and try to change my native language thinking way.

Nearly three decades of reform and opening up, China's comprehensive strength was improved, while Chinese culture has also been affected. Obviously the young Chinese learning some foreign languages, and result of the neglect of their own cultures. Such as the impact of Western Festival Culture. The young people are very enthusiastic about the Valentine's Day and the Christmas Day. And most of them are prefer foreign films or TV dramas to homebred.
I had heard that a survey showed 70% of young people know the source of Chinese New Year but to know the source of Christmas was 80.5%. We can see that Chinese young people's degree of concern to foreign holidays is much more than traditional festivals in China. Half of them thought that the Chinese New Year grew weaker and weaker and chose the Christmas instead of Chinese New Year. I think the important factors led to such phenomenon probably is a modern way of life, colorful leisure options and the invasion of foreign festivals, and etc. Though the foreign culture far from the mainstream, its effects increasing, and become a problem which can not be ignored.
Almost young Chinese people think that Christmas is fun than The Chinese New Year. On Christmas Day, some people shopping, some people go to watch a movie, some dinner with friends. It seems a Chinese style Western Day, but still keeps the impact of foreign culture invasion.
The culture of movies. The numbers of Chinese young people who likes watching foreign films is far more than the domestic films. The last film AVATAR was reached at full box office record in many Chinese cites. Compare with the same period Chinese movies, it was much more popular. Not only the U.S. film and dramas accepted by more and more young people, but also the Japanese and Korean sweeping in China in recent years. Not so much that young people study language in order to watch a drama might as well say they watch movies in order to study a language.
In conclusion, the invasion of foreign culture lead to the impact of China was relatively large, but it did not shake the fundamental. On the contrary, such an impact is beneficial and worthy of promotion, conducive to promoting Chinese national cultural development and independent. As we thought a country's independence is not just politically, both the economy and culture should be independent. Under the constant integration, the culture can get better development.

My Tesol- mall study

The purpose of my TESOL-MALL study is to put teaching theory into practice, improve the ability of research，and develop the skills of communication.

To study a theory or a method of language teaching, I also need to identify whether it will suit for students or not. There is an impressed English teacher of my high school，who had been taught my language by her excellent speech and lovely body movement. And students all paid close attention to her classroom while they were very interested in the English language. Now after study some TESOL course, I can analyze why students like her classroom. It seems that my language teacher was well prepared for the classroom by hard studied a lot of teaching principles and theories，not created in a vacuum. So I think language teachers will consider contains what the style of a classroom, how to make a positive classroom，how to set up the homework and many other questions.

Study TESOL, to improve my ability of research. When study, I have to read quite more data and write the thesis. Because of that, I need to read articles in normal times. Reading, especially to read a scholarly article is bothering me. Moreover, there was much none native language article. Sometimes it is hard to make progress；Sometimes I have to finish reading and response in a limited time. After some exercises, I found not each paragraph need to peruse; not each word need to know. I expect I can improve reading comprehension, develop the communicated skills. Through a last course, the professor asked all the students to exchange their own experiences when teaching language and made groups’ lesson plans. I had learned the way of brain storm by my classmates when teaching language or solve some problems. It was very helpful to my learning after.

Studying TESOL can get a rich acquisition, whatever it is in language study and my life.

My thoughts of plagiarism

I think plagiarism is a unethical behavior. It is copyright infringement from others and also creates the credit crisis for oneself. By the development of accelerated social today, write a academic article also the same as produced the fast food which is only orienting the results but losing the nutrition. Some articles created without imagination and instead of different with others. In my opinion, there is no audience want take much time to read many pointless articles.
